Ballard Neighborhood

With strong Scandinavian influence, Ballard is a distinct community located along the Salmon Bay in northwest Seattle. Ballard is often associated with the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, what is generally known as the Ballard Locks. This waterway at the northwest end of Seattle is a connection between Puget Sound and Seattle's two principal lakes, Lake Union and Lake Washington. A favorite location for strolling or for boating, the Ballard Locks are a popular summertime attraction. During certain times of year visitors can observe through underground viewing windows, salmon use the fish ladder located here to return to their spawning ground.

Here local Jazz Festival is a spectacular celebration of jazz, with live performances in vibrant community venues. It has become a very popular gathering, filled with real community pride and spirit, and drawing local families and music lovers and visitors alike.

The Shilshole area and Golden Gardens Beach are known for great seafood restaurants and beautiful sunsets. The recently renovated park has dog areas, duck ponds, and lovely landscaping to draw walkers and runners to its shores. On and around Market Street is Ballard's modern business district. Visitors for its unique neighborhood attracts with boutiques, artists studios, and galleries side by side with manufacturers of fishing equipment and even a television studio.

Due to lower home and rental prices, families and students find the area affordable. Shilshole, North Beach and Blue Ridge attract a wealthier crowd to its view housing options.
