"One of my Favorite Things"

Oh to be spontaneous!!  My husband and I went pumpkin picking at Craven Farm over the weekend in a treasured NW community – Snohomish – and on our drive back to Seattle passed by Choice Turf Driving Range operated by Stocker Farms – another wonderful place to go for pumpkins, hay rides and fresh cider this time of year.  We passed by the driving range, looked at each other and said:  “Wanna go?” So around we went, parked in the sand & gravel lot, glanced over at a structure covering farm equipment, walked up to the “Garden Cottage” window with our muddy boots and asked if we could hit a few.  Sure!  They supplied buckets of golf balls and away we went!  If you’re without your clubs, borrow some stand-ins from the family there and take in the sights:  red-tailed hawks, sky divers, small planes, open air, open land, mountain range, majesty and all.  This place is a real gem exactly as it is, without pretension.  Having grown up in a small NY farming town myself, I found complete enjoyment  at this driving range with one of my favorite people and doing one of my favorite things – being athletic outdoors.  As has been said:  “I had rather be on my farm than be emperor of the world”- George Washington – and with that!  Cheers to healthy communities, healthy activities, the changing seasons, and Stocker’s Choice Turf Driving Range on a lazy afternoon!

Woodland Park Zoo: Seattle, WA

The Zoo for Me and You.  I was so impressed with the Seattle Zoo this summer with my husband.  The facility is clean, open, fresh, exciting, interactive, all-encompassing, full of sights and information.  We can learn of the global efforts we support when we become members, of the ongoing international work our Zoo community participates in, we’re reminded of the diversity within nature, people and countries.  I took some video and by the time we reached the “Arctic” – “Asia” – and “Farm U.S.A.” areas, I had become so enamored with the experience I’m sure my camera ended up in the bottom of my purse.  We’re planning seasonal trips back – it’s worth the time and enjoyment and discovery.  We doubled up on his motorcycle and found street parking easily across the street on a Saturday.  There’s also a parking lot right on the premise and easy public transit access.  Phinney Ridge Neighborhood is home to the Woodland Park Zoo and it’s also close to Green Lake, Greenwood, Fremont, Wallingford and Ballard neighborhoods, full of classic houses and new build condos.  Oh, bring snacks when you visit.  The food & treats were just so-so in quality and there are places to picnic and plenty of benches to rest on.

The Experience Music Project (EMP), jeeze people are REALLY opinionated about this Frank Gehry structure…and wouldn’t that be the point?  This masterpiece is the essence of Rock N’ Roll in Seattle – passionate, in-your-face, unconventional, no apologies, you love it, you hate it, it stirs something up!  That’s the EMP.  I’m very excited to be one of the Seattle Architecture Foundation’s (SAF) city guides who will be co-leading a new tour of the EMP this fall.  We’ll be exploring the interior and the exterior and including areas not normally open to the public for view.  This is a brand new SAF tour and hasn’t been listed on the website yet, but the first actual presentation is on October 19, 2010.  Ongoing tours will run on the 2nd Saturday and 3rd Tuesday of each month there after.  The EMP and Seattle Center are planted nearby Uptown Queen Anne, Belltown, Denny Triangle, South Lake Union neighborhoods and easily accessed by car, public transit, or foot.  Just follow the needle!
