Relocation to Jubilee

Jubilee is a retirement community in Thurston county with modern 2 bedroom homes on one level, a private beach on Puget Sound, a big lodge with an exercise and swimming pool, and two golf courses running through the community.  Many retirees are making the calculation that they can cash out of the expensive Seattle area and retire comfortably in Lacey and Olympia where the cost of living is lower: cheaper housing, cheaper gas (no RTA tax), and much else.  My parents made this very move back in 2003 when Jubilee first got underway, selling their townhouse in Kirkland.  They worried about living at a one hour distance from their children and grandchildren, but the financial considerations were compelling.  As it turned out, we kids enjoy the drive and making a day trip out of it.  The grandkids enjoy the swimming pool and hike down to the beach.  Some of my parents’ friends even followed them down to Jubilee.  And they have made dozens of new friends – more than they ever had up in Kirkland.

This last weekend I toured a house up for resale in Jubilee.  This was one of the smaller floor plans at 1,386 square feet and at this time of writing it is the next to cheapest house available at $209,500.  The house has an attractive, modern floor plan with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all open to each other; a separate master suite with attached bathroom and walk-in closet; a guest bedroom with full bathroom nearby; a full laundry room; and a big two car garage.  The front yard landscaping is taken care of by the association dues.  The quiet back yard is fully landscaped for easy maintenance.  This home sits in the original Jubilee neighborhood, a short walk away from the Jubilee Lodge.

Jubilee Lodge

The heart of the Jubilee community is its enormous 26,000 square foot lodge with grand lobby, ball room, meeting space, exercise facility, and swimming hall with big pool and hot tub.  The residents have made the facility their own by forming new clubs and creating frequent social events and entertainment at the lodge.  I’m constantly hearing about some new party or performance my parents attended at the lodge.

Jubilee has a network of trails running around the property and these terminate at its own private beach on Puget Sound.  From the beach you can enjoy a fine view of Mount Rainier, the Olympic mountains, and the water.

Trilogy Tour

A kind resident took me on a tour of Trilogy last Saturday.  I was vaguely aware of Trilogy as a local retirement community.  My parents had looked there before ending up in Jubilee in Thurston county for their retirement.  My first surprise was how vast Trilogy is: 10 neighborhoods, a 32,000 square foot lodge, an 18 hole golf course with its own lodge – all interspersed with generous stretches of forest and trails.

We met first at a Trilogy house up for resale.  This was one of the larger 2 bedroom floor plans in Trilogy at 2,300 square feet.  I should say: “2 bedroom suites”, since they each included a private bathroom.  The Great Room with its stunning kitchen were truly impressive.  My favorite features of the house included:

• Two story rotunda at the entry that catches the sunlight
• First class kitchen constructed of the highest end materials and a massive kitchen island on which two could sleep comfortably
• The three-sided gas fireplace separating the sitting/reading area from the dining area
• Lovely flooring throughout: hardwoods, slate, tile, and plush carpeting
• The big Trex deck with view of the greenbelt
• The attractive facade and uniformity of the neighborhood

Trilogy Lodge

The tour continued at the Cascade Club Lodge.  What impressed me here besides the sheer size of the building was how well designed it was, such that it attracted a large number of residents on a Saturday morning for a variety of activities:

• Snacking and computing in the Cyber Cafe
• A classical music group was practicing in the ballroom
• A lecture on nutrition was well-attended
• The health club was busy with members getting in their morning workouts
• Some grandkids were enjoying the pool.

Trilogy Near Completion

Only forty lots remain to be sold by builder Shea Homes, and then Trilogy will be have reached its targeted size of 1,500 homes.  The builder is closing up its sales office next to the lodge and providing this building to the community association.  The association is well-run and well-funded with dues having been kept down to $198 per month.  At this time of writing, 36 homes are up for resale in Trilogy.

Seattle Snow and Ice Storm

Seattle is suffering through an unprecedented week of snow and ice storms that have cut power to 250,000 homes and brought the city to a halt.  Our usual mild winters will sprinkle 1-2 inches on us, everybody will stay home one day to play, and then it all melts by the next day.  This storm brought 6 inches of snow to the Seattle area which was followed up by a layer of ice that fell all day on Thursday.  Friday we are looking forward to icy sheets on the roads.  Midwesterners, of course, who get accustomed to snow all winter long, laugh at us and our poor winter driving.  But they don’t have our hills to contend with.

The kids are loving it as the school districts announce closures day by day.  Even the University of Washington has closed, which is unusual.
